The Bight Bites
After our lovely stay in Lucky Bay we headed up towards Norsenan and across the Nullarbor. We made good time so pressed on past our scheduled stop and went all the way to Balladonia. The next day was windy and wild so again we went past our scheduled stop and instead found a free camp nestled in the dunes at the old telegraph station at Eucla. We enjoyed the walk through the dunes to the old jetty our first real view of the Bight.
The next day was also windy and cold and now wet. So you guessed it, we went past our chosen stop. On the way we stopped at many lookouts, meeting the same intrepid travellers braving the wind and rain each time, so it was quite social. The cliffs and wild water were worth stopping for.
We drove all the way for another overnight camp in Penong. Penong has a windmill museum which we enjoyed. The windmills enjoyed the wind.
The next day was an easy day into Ceduna one day early so this turned our one night planned stay into two. The wind stopped and we enjoyed a nice seafood lunch at the pub and had an easy day in the relatively nicer weather. The next day we drove to Smokey Bay and found an Oyster man selling excellent oysters for $25 for 18 shucked. Very lovely Pacific oysters here. Throughout the day the wind rose again, that night it was averaging 50 km/hr and gusting near 70. It also started raining and the temp dropped. Not wanting to put down the van or tow it in the wind, our Ceduna stay extended to three nights. We mostly hid inside the van that day except to visit an old ruin and have another dinner in the pub.
Finally leaving Ceduna we went about an hour down the road to Streaky Bay where we enjoyed a scenic drive out to Cape Baur then an afternoon in what was now sunshine enjoying a lovely Community Seafood Celebration on the lawns by the Bay.
