More Coral Coast and Shark Bay

Image
First it is time to update some stats. Distance Travelled 20306 km Bird Species  Identified  68 Signs indicating Gouldian Finches in the area More than 20 Gouldian Finches spotted 0 Number of times annoying Park Brake Service light  has come on in last six months 3 From  Warroora we headed for one night at Canarvon before heading inland a bit to Gascoyne Junction. We didn't  do much in Canarvon other than discover a fantastic Italian providore. Lots of wildflowers  on the trip to Gasgoyne Junction which is the main reason we went there. Not much in Gascoyne Junction itself, a rebuilt pub and caravan site with modern facilities all built since floods destroyed  the old pub a few years ago. We day tripped into the Kennedy  Ranges tracking more wildflowers and some different  dry gorge walks. We loved the wildflowers and scenery  but so did  the flies. We finally used the fly nets we had bought in Queensl...

The Pilbara and Coral Coast

Image
From Broome we drove to Cape Keraudren which is at the southern end of Eighty Mile Beach. We camped overlooking a bay which was full of water when we arrived, but almost entirely dry except a small channel when the tide was out. A drop of almost six meters. A peaceful place with brilliant sunsets and sunrises. We then drove into Karajini National Park in the heart of the Pilbara dodging road trains and enormous tipper trucks. Karajini is amazing, the red rocks, muted greens of the spinifex,  and blue skies are not to be missed. There is also lots of great infrastructure in the lookouts and walks, all made of steel which is no surprise given the mines nearby. We climbed down multiple gorges and swam in some lovely waterholes. One of my favourites on this trip. We spent a night at a forgettable roadhouse then proceeded to Exmouth.  We stayed two nights here after failing to get sites in Cape Range National Park that apparently book out soon after they are available 180 days befo...

Broome and Beyond

Image
We left our intrepid  adventurers perched on a cliff overlooking Pender Bay without a hand brake. It is an amazing place with red cliffs and blue sky. We spent the next day on a cultural tour with Bolo Angus and Johnny from Southern Cross tours. We and a few more guests followed them in our 4wds to his Lullumb country on the Dampier Peninsula by the King Sound. We really enjoyed this insightful tour through the creeks and mangroves to a stunning small cove and the oysters, fish and damper lunch. We spent another day in Pender Bay waking to the sight of humpbacks cruising by and walking and swimming. We reluctantly left Pender Bay and went to Broome where we were joined by our friend  Bronwyn for a break from the van in a nice AirBnB by Town Beach. In Broome we managed to eat and drink at many fine restaurants,  breweries and cafes, view incredible sunsets at Cable Beach, swim at Cable Beach, walk and tour through the historic older parts of Broome, do another cultural...
