The Bight Bites

Image
After our lovely stay in Lucky Bay we headed up towards Norsenan and across the Nullarbor. We made good time so pressed on past our scheduled stop and went all the way to Balladonia. The next day was windy and wild so again we went past our scheduled stop and instead found a free camp nestled in the dunes at the old telegraph station at Eucla. We enjoyed the walk through the dunes to the old jetty our first real view of the Bight.  I am an attractive bird The next day was also windy and cold and now wet. So you guessed it, we went past our chosen stop. On the way we stopped at many lookouts,  meeting the same intrepid travellers braving the wind and rain each time, so it was quite social. The cliffs and wild water were worth stopping  for. We drove all the way for another overnight camp in Penong. Penong has a windmill museum which we enjoyed.  The windmills enjoyed the wind. The next day was an easy day into Ceduna one day early so this turned our one night planned ...

Esperance Region

We travelled down to the coast from the Stirling Ranges through Ravensthorpe to the Fitzgerald  River National Park where we stayed in a great small campsite on Hamersley Inlet. This is a wild scenic part of the south coast. We spent our days walking the coast and over heathlands and rocky headlands. Stirling Ranges  Ravensthorpe Wildflower  Show We then spent three fairly grey days in Esperance. We enjoyed the museum, especially the bits of Starlab that fell around Esperance, walking around town and driving  the coast road. This drive has many lookouts over the rough and spectacular coast. From Esperance we travelled the relatively short drive to The Cape Le Grand National Park. We are staying at the fantastic camp ground at Lucky Bay. Lucky Bay has incredbly fine very white sand that makes for very light blue water. We had a swim in the clear bracing water in training  for Bermagui    From here we start travelling east over the Nullarbor.

The South West

From Sandy Cape we went via the Pinnacles to Perth. The Pinnacles were OK but not the pinnacle of sights on our jouney so far.  In Perth we stayed with Alison's Cousin Susanne and husband Nick in their lovely house in the the Perth Hills. They were very generous  hosts. We met up with Alison's other Perth cousins Chris and Jo and Kathy whilst there.  Perth was wet and a bit dreary while we were there but we managed to get into the city and see the excellent  WA museum and wander around in the rain a bit, but failed to get into the East Perth cemetery to look up an early settler relative of Alison's as the cemetry only opened 2 hours a week. Nick and Susie also took us to a fun gin tasting and lunch in a geat old pub in Guildford. Our next destination  was the Margaret River region. We started with a top class meal at Vasse Felix that involved Alison enjoying a meal that had brussel sprouts and rhubarb as ingredients, which is a wonder. We stayed three nights in ...
