Gorging on Gorgeous Gorges on the Gibb

After a day exploring  the dubious delights of Wyndham and a three hour wait for a haircut and bash plate repairs in Kununurra we headed down the Gibb River Road.

View from 5 Rivers lookout Wyndham

Our first stop was El Questro station. We had a nice campsite by the river but as seems the way with Discovery parks they have nice facilities, but really pack in the people and the ratio of facilities to people is not great. Despite this, we loved our time here visiting Zebedee Springs and El Questro gorge. The walk in to El Questro involved lots of rock hopping through a narrowing palm filled gorge to a swimming hole.

On the way to our next stop at Ellenbrae station we did the walk in to Emma Gorge. Again the walk involved lots of boulder hopping on the way to a fantastic waterfall. This walk was quite busy and somewhere near the top I managed to strain a side muscle twisting around. We had a swim and on the way back down Alison slid on a rock and fell and cut her knee and bruised her legs and pride. The busy path was full of bouncing toddlers, preening younger influencers and annoyingly agile eighty year olds all either pushing past or expressing concern for us as we struggled back.

We drove our sore bodies to Ellenbrae Station where we stayed for a few days and recovered. Enjoying there famous scones, Sandy Gorge and some delicious  lamb shanks we cooked in the camp oven over a fire for three hours. The nights have actually  been quite cool so this hit the spot, especially  paired with lamington flavoured  rum.

The next night we stayed  at a free camp on the Gibb River. We got there early and secured a great spot overlooking the sandy river watching the birds as they flitted in and out.

Our next stop was Drysdale  station. After hearing horror stories of the road north from Drysdale we eschewed the drive and instead took a fantastic light plane scenic flight up the Price Regent River and over the amazing North Kimberley coastline and the Mitchell Falls. We loved this flight a real highlight. So many photos so hard to choose.
